History and Development of the Shan Scripts 750 Baht

History and Development of the Shan Scripts

By Sai Kam Mong

From the Foreword

Shan historiography, regrettably, has so far been under-researched. On of the reasons is perhaps the inaccessibility of Shan historical documents, which are scattered widely in the Shan State and its adjacent areas. In addition, these documents often follow seemingly disorganized systems of writing which discourage scholars in their attempts to examine them.

This book by Mr. Sai Kam Mong is, therefore, a welcome achievement that will encourage scholars to approach Shan historical sources equipped with a proper understanding of Shan orthography. It is my sincere hope that the publication of the History and Development of the Shan Scripts by this learned Shan scholar will be instrumental in contributing not only to the advancement of Shan historiography but also to the study of Dai-speaking people in general.

Sai Kam Mong earned an M.A. in history from the University of Mandalay and was a lecturer for many years in the departments of history in Mandalay and Yangon Universities. He specializes in the history of the Shan in Myanmar.
