About the Author

Anna J. Allott is a Senior Research Fellow in Burmese Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where she has lectured on the literature and culture of Burma for thirty-seven years. She is also the Honorary Secretary of the Britain-Burma Society. In the mid-80's, Allott worked closely with PEN Honorary Member and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Daw Aung San Suu Kyi while the latter was researching her doctoral thesis on Burmese literature, grammar, lexicography, language planning, and the Burmese literacy movement, and was co-editor of the Burmese-English Dictionary which was published by the School of Oriental and African Studies.
